Cosmetic Teeth Whitening – Industry at a Glance
The demand for Teeth Whitening in the United States is undeniable. The industry as a whole is growing rapidly, with total industry sales estimates reaching $11 billion by end of 2007, and growth estimates of 15% annually for the next 5 years. Currently, industry sales are made up of two main segments, dentist office products and procedures, and over the counter products. Dentist offices provide in office or “chairside” whitening as well as custom take-home trays. OTC products primarily consist of strips and trays, but many variants of these exist in many forms. The cosmetic segment is just beginning in the United States, and the opportunity for growth in this segment is huge.
Teeth Whitening Overview
There are two general types of teeth whitening. The first, most commonly referred to as “in-office” whitening, is a process where a high concentration of peroxide (Carbamide or Hydrogen) is placed on the teeth to provide fast results. The major drawbacks of “in-office” whitening are price ($400-$900) and especially teeth sensitivity (due to the high peroxide percentages).
The second type of teeth whitening is referred to as
“take-home” whitening which includes the take home
trays prescribed by a dentist or any of the over-thecounter
solutions such as Crest White Strips. This
process includes a lower concentration of peroxide
that is placed on your teeth for an extended period
of time, usually once a day for up to 4 weeks
(product processes vary). The major drawbacks
of “take-home” whitening are teeth sensitivity due
to continued exposure of peroxide on the teeth as
well as what we call the “dedication factor”. It takes
dedication to follow the strict regimens that these
systems require. Many people use them for a few
days and fall off the wagon, so to speak. Sensational
Smiles combines the effectiveness of both of these
systems for better whitening results and happier
customers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is it safe?
A: Peroxide-based teeth whitening has been employed
by dentists for over a decade, and over-the-counter
products such as Crest WhiteStrips are used by millions
of people worldwide with little or no side effects. We
don’t recommend the Sensational Smile process for
anyone under 16 years of age or pregnant/lactating
women.
Q: Does it cause sensitivity?
A: In most cases, no. Since our specially formulated peroxide gel is only on your teeth for 15 minutes at a time, clients rarely experience sensitivity.
Q: I have caps on my front teeth: Will it work on them?
A: While hydrogen peroxide will have no negative effect
on fillings or crowns, it will not whiten them either. It
will remove stains and clean composite work.
Q: How long will it last?
A: By following our post-whitening instructions, your teeth will always be lighter than they were before. We generally recommend touch-up applications every 6 onths, in addition to our recommended maintenance program.
Q: What is the process?
A: After getting comfortable in the chair, you and the Service Representative will agree on your “before” shade on the tooth shader (industry standard). The SR will then present you with your silicon custom mouthpiece. The gel is placed in each cavity of the mouthpiece. You then “self-administer” the tray back in your mouth, put on your protective amber sunglasses, and turn on the LED whitening light for 15 minutes. It’s that easy. After the procedure, you and SR both agree on the “after” shade to your satisfaction.
Q: How is this different from BriteSmile and Zoom?
A: The Sensational Smile process is very similar to BriteSmile and Zoom (peroxide agent with LED light), but there are a few key differences including percentage of peroxide, self-administration, issues with teeth sensitivity (we rarely have clients who experience sensitivity), and most importantly, price (we are hundreds less).
Q: Don’t you have to be a dentist to whiten teeth?
A: No. The FDA and ADA have approved the use of peroxide for over-the-counter use and our product is self-administered. We never touch your mouth, give you dental advice, or present ourselves as dentists. We do recommend that you visit the dentist on a regular basis.
Q: What causes tooth staining?
A: There are many causes. The most common are aging and the consumption of staining agents, such as tobacco, coffee, tea, red wine, and staining foods (mustard, blueberries, tomato sauce, etc.). A good rule of thumb is if it will stain your shirt, it will stain your teeth. Many people have what we call “tooth formation” stains, caused by tetracycline, antibiotics, or excessive fluoride.
Q: How can I keep my results?
A: By following our post procedure recommendations, including no staining agents for 24 hours and the use of our Maintenance Package. Also, continue to follow a healthy dental regimen including brushing twice a day, flossing, and regular check-ups with your dentist. It’s also a good idea to rinse with water after consuming a staining agent.
Q: Who can benefit from teeth whitening
A: Almost anyone. However, teeth whitening is a dynamic process. The procedure may not be as effective for some as it is for others. It’s mostly about expectations. If your teeth are stained from years of coffee, tea, and tobacco, it is unrealistic to think your teeth will get as white as snow. Your whitening technician will go over expected results during pre-procedure.
Q: How many shades will I move?
A: It depends on many factors. Our general rule of thumb is 2-6 shades with one 15-minute application, 4-10 with two 15-minute applications.
Q: I was given tetracycline when I was young; will it
work for me? Will it at least lighten the color of my teeth (less gray)?
A: Not in all cases. We recommend you to check with your dentist. But, many people with tetracycline stains have had their teeth whitened and were happy with the results. It depends on your expectations.
